Resting in Nansen's winter quarters
Fridtjof Nansen (1861 -1930) was a larger-than-life figure: He was the first to cross Greenland over the inland ice, he revolutionized polar travel techniques, and influenced all subsequent expeditions to both the Arctic and Antarctic. What could be more exciting than following in his footsteps? During their North Pole search in1893-96, Nansen and his expedition partner Fredrik Johansen spent five winter months in a self-built dwelling. On our Nansen-Expedition, Borge Ousland and I found the exact place where Nansens dwelling had stood. What a thrilling moment! Remarkably, even the roof beam was still there after more than a hundred years.
First, you see the iconic Nansen Picture, with the dwelling completely covered with snow. Then, you see the same location a hundred years later. The only thing still standing is the wooden roof beam.
