Visit to the Cold War

Crossing Greenland is also a journey through time. A visit to the American early warning station DYE 2 takes you back to the Cold War. The abbreviation DYE stands for Distant Early Warning. DYE 2 (66°29′N 46°18′W) became operational in 1957, featuring telescoping structures atop the Greenland ice cap. The station was abandoned in 1988. Today, the steel monster is slowly sinking into the ice. But you can still go inside and have a look around. It's as if the crew had left in a hurry. Everything is still there: files, food, furniture, equipment. Really spooky. In 2021, DYE 2 offered us refuge from a storm. We were trapped in the station for five long days - time enough to go exploring. Come with us.
